Malignant Mesothelioma

Malignant Mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer in which malignant cells are found in the sac lining the chest or abdomen. Tumors of the mesothelium can be non-cancerous (Benign Mesothelioma) or cancerous (Malignant Mesothelioma). Malignant Mesothelioma is linked to asbestos exposure.

Most mesothelioma forms in the chest cavity. This is called Pleural Mesothelioma. When it forms in the abdomen, it is called Peritoneal Mesothelioma (or Abdominal Mesothelioma). Pericardial Mesothelioma is formed around the heart and is very rare.

Symptoms of Malignant Mesothelioma can include shortness of breath and pain under the rib cage. In some cases Malignant Mesothelioma can cause fluid to collect around the lung or in the abdomen. You should consult a physician if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Pain under your rib cage
  • Pain or swelling in your abdomen
  • Lumps in your abdomen
  • Unexplainable weight loss
