Mesothelioma Cancer
Have you been diagnosed with mesothelioma cancer? If so, you should know that mesothelioma is a very serious form of cancer and that virtually all cases can be linked to
asbestos poisoning. In the United
States alone, nearly 3,000 people of all
ages are diagnosed every year with mesothelioma.
That number may seem high to you, but mesothelioma cancer is extremely rare. It most often occurs in the thin membrane lining
the lungs, chest and abdomen. The cancer attacks the membranes, called
mesothelium, that surround and protect vital organs like the lungs and heart.
These cancerous cells can metastasize (spread) quickly to other parts of the
body.
If you have been diagnosed with a malignant mesothelioma
cancer, there are several types you should be aware of, including:
The mesothelium is a membrane that covers and protects most of the internal organs of the body. It is composed of two layers of cells. One layer immediately surrounds the organ. The other layer forms a sac around it. The mesothelium produces a lubricating fluid that is released between these layers, allowing moving organs to move easily.
Mesothelioma cancer is a particularly dangerous disease because it has a very long latency period. Symptoms may not appear for 10, 20 or even 40 years after exposure to asbestos. In addition, once symptoms do appear the disease progresses quickly.
Mesothelioma Cancer Linked to Asbestos Exposure
Working with asbestos is the major risk factor for mesothelioma cancer. A history of asbestos exposure at work is reported in the majority of cases. Asbestos is the name of a group of minerals that occur naturally as masses of strong, flexible fibers that can be separated into thin threads and woven. Asbestos has been widely used in many industrial products, including cement, brake linings, roof shingles, flooring products, textiles, and insulation.
